They Go To Die Exhibition: They Go To Die will be an exhibition and screening that illustrates the climbing number of TB victims amongst miners in Southern Africa. The rate of TB amongst gold miners is the highest in the world. The disease is so widespread in the mines, that mining activities are estimated to be responsible for around one in three of all new cases in Southern Africa. These statistics are frightening and they suggest an epidemic of such proportions that it is genuinely thought to be driving the spread of TB around the globe. But unfortunately that’s all they are; statistics, numbers. Even numbers as high as these tell us nothing of the human suffering caused by TB/HIV. That’s why Yale epidemiologist Jonathan Smith produced ‘They Go To Die’. The film follows the stories of miners sent home from the mines with no continuity of treatment and with no access care…..men who were literally sent home to die.
