South African gold miners strike for better pay

You may have seen on the news yesterday that around 80,000 gold miners in South Africa have gone on strike to call for better pay. The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is calling for a wage rise of 10%, revising this down from their original demand of 60%.

BBC News reports that 'NUM spokesman Lesiba Seshoka had denied that a 60% pay rise demand was excessive, telling AFP: "If there are bosses that sit in air-conditioned offices earning millions a year, why can't they (miners) earn 7,000 ($700) basic a month?"'
